Saving Energy in Your New Home

No-one likes increases in bills and during the winter months, energy bills are definitely something that tends to rise. If you’re looking to move home to a bigger property the cost of living in the house is likely to be something you have considered. We wanted to share with you some quick tips to save energy and hopefully help you avoid too much costly energy bills.

Know What You’re Paying

If you ask most people what they pay for their mobile phone tariff or their monthly broadband, they’re likely to be able to give you a ball-park figure on what they pay. However, the same cannot be said for energy bills – most people have no idea what their energy use is costing them. In order to save money, you should make sure you have an understanding of what you’re paying and why, after all how can you save money when you don’t know what you‘re paying to begin with?

Be on Standby

Lots of us are guilty of leaving appliances on when we don’t need them which is costing us money for nothing. Try to get into the habit of switching your appliances onto standby mode. Encourage the rest of the household to do the same and you’ll likely notice a difference in how much energy the house uses each month.

How Much Water Are You Using?

We often waste water without even thinking about it and it all costs money. For example, don’t put the shower on to run and then leave it running while you potter about getting jobs done. Also if you’re washing up make sure you full the sink with water rather than just letting the tap run as you rinse the dishes. Even only filling the kettle with the amount of water you need rather than boiling a full kettle each time can save you £6 a year.

Keep Warm

Pay attention to what you’re doing to keep your house warm – close curtains at night and invest in draught excluders for the doors. Make sure windows are closed and keep internal doors closed. This helps to keep the house nice and toasty without the need to have your full central heating system switched on for hours at a time.

These might be small changes but over a year can add up to a big difference. As the changes are so small, you should find you’re able to implement them without too much hassle, which means you can get on with saving money straight away. They may also be energy grants from the Government you’re entitled to which is well worth looking into.
